04/10/2008: Yet another downtime by dmg
- Today, at around 4am UTC, the DB server crashed along with the user table. It took some time to got it up again. Fortunately, it seems nothing was lost (actually the table of users encountered severe problems, but the repair seemed to have worked correctly). The database is now up against, a deadline extension of 24h was performed (thanks to the users table crash, no game timed out due to this downtime and I was able to react).
Sorry for the inconvenience, I want to have feedback from the hoster but I'm currently thinking of a replacement plan for hosting OGS.
01/10/2008: Downtime handling - Looking for ideas by dmg
- Hello all,
We have faced a annoying problem on Monday with a pretty long downtime.
The solutions to the downtimes are not trivial. However, I have decided, given the feedbacks on the "Downtime for maintenance" thread, to implement an automatic deadline extension for downtime. I want to have opinion of people here, especially CS specialist.
Three questions arise from this :
(1) How to detect downtime and act before the deadline system ?
(2) How long a downtime is considered a handicap ?
(3) What is the correct deadline compensation for the downtime ?
(3) Let's start from the one that reach the more consensual opinion. Given the previous thread, considering that a downtime might prevent people from logging during one day depending on the time of the downtime, the correct extension should be 24hours.
(2) Some people thinks that even half an hour is a handicap. I consider might self a handicap when the downtime is logger than 6 hours. However, I think the better ch...

Sorry for the inconvenience.
02/08/2008: Bots' holiday by maproom
- The three bots that play on OGS, AyaGo AyaGo6 and GnuGo, will be going on holiday tomorrow, Sunday August 3rd, for six days.
This is because I will be away from home, and unable to tend them if anything goes wrong. I will leave them playing (but with their holiday flags set), and if all goes well, they will continue to move as normal. But if there is any kind of accident, they will all stop making moves, and won't start again until I can fix whatever has gone wrong, late on Friday 8th or early on Saturday 9th.

23/05/2008: Timeouts unrated after three games -- Follow-up by dmg
- Dear OGS players,
I've been resumed here the different solutions that are available from the thread http://online-go.nainwak.org/forums/thread.php?threadID=1622
I've ignored rules that are impracticable like resetting the timeout rated when the user come backs and other stuff.
Please revote! :)
09/05/2008: Timeouts unrated after three games by dmg
- Dear OGS users,
In another thread, the current rules of having games unrated after three consecutive loss by timeouts was widely criticized (http://online-go.nainwak.org/forums/thread.php?threadID=1620). rcc suggested that we should drop this limitation, what are you feeling about that?
Best regards,

29/04/2008: *IMPORTANT* Server switch by dmg
- Dear OGS users,
Since three months, we are preparing for a server switch. We are now in the final phase and I will initiate the server switch before next week if everything turns well. The current scheduled date is Friday, 2nd. This server switch will last around 10hours and you won't be able to access OGS during this period of time. I want to excuse myself for all the inconvenience. Of course, all deadlines will be extended by the duration of the switch.
You should prepare yourself for several inconveniences:
-- The server downtime.
-- For several days, the url online-go.com and www.online-go.com might become inaccessible. The new URL will be posted during the switch.
-- If you are using a notifier, please be sure to have an updated version of it that include php version (if you are a notifier developer, be sure to provide that version).
-- If you have included HTML tags in your profile, you should be prepared to strip them as the new version will display your profile...
06/04/2008: League Tournament Rules Precision by dmg
- Hello all,
I am posting that to put some precision on league tournaments promotion and relegation after some thought on it when coding the interface for draw helps.
A challenger for the title won't be able to enter next round until the title match is finished (that's to avoid title holders to play in the league tournament).
Exactly two players is relegated from each group except from the championship division where 4 players are relegated.
One or two players from each group will go to the upper tier. Except for filling the championship division. The number of promotions will depends of the available spots due to people leaving the tournament. Every former title holders are eligibles to fill a spot in the championship division if available. An old title holder who just lost his title or a challenger who failed to win the title can rejoin the tournament as a member of the championship division.
When the number of promotion does not match the number of group, the decision ...
29/03/2008: Club System by dmg
- Hello everybody,
Due to a lot of circumstance (complexity of the system, lack of interactions between players of a club, lack of interest, load for the club leaders, bugs in the system), I've decided to drop the club system in the next days.
However, this do not drop the idea of having clubs so I'd like to open this discussion for new ideas on a club system.
The first idea we had when discussing with illluck was to include the teaching system with those club like Go Schools. I don't have any idea on how to do this. So please enjoy proposing new ideas.
Regards all,
-- Damien
